There are a number of formulas each composed of a number of mnemonic syllables referring to the several Nakshatra padas beginning with the first pada of Aswini and giving Rasis in a certain order. It is with reference to the order of Rasis in these formulas that the Rasi Mahadasas of which a life is to consist should be determined. The Vakyakrama, men of one school say, should be adhered to.

अन्य विद्वानों का (वाक्य-क्रम वालों का) मत है कि उस नक्षत्र चरण के लिये जो पूर्ण दशा १०० वर्ष, या ८५ वर्ष, या ८३ वर्ष, या ८६ वर्ष जैसी जिस चरण की बताई गई है — उस सारी का भुक्त-भोग्य (नक्षत्र चरण के जितने घड़ी-पल बीत गये हैं और जितने घड़ी-पल शेष हैं उसके हिसाब से) निकालना चाहिये। उदाहरण के लिये अश्विनी के प्रथम चरण का आधा भाग बीत गया है, आधा शेष है, तो १०० वर्ष में से ५० बीत गये, ५० शेष रहे।
