Classical Vedic astrology holds that the birth chart is not only a map of this life — it is a record of what you carried in from previous ones. The 9th house (dharma-bhāva) is the house of past-life merit, accumulated virtue, and the nature of the birth you came from. Phaladīpikā 14.24 states explicitly: the 9th house from the lagna shows the previous birth; the 5th house shows the future birth.
The 9th lord — the planet ruling the 9th house — is the single most important significator of the past birth. Its sign, dignity (strength), and the planets influencing it together reveal the life form, world, region, and social rank of the previous existence.
The Four Pillars of Past-Life Analysis
Previous World (Loka): Bṛhat Jātaka 25.14 identifies four lokas through the drekkana (10° division) of the stronger luminary — Sun or Moon. Jupiter as drekkana lord places the previous life in Devaloka (celestial realm); Moon or Venus in Pitriloka (ancestor realm); Sun or Mars in Mrityuloka (mortal world); Saturn or Mercury in Patala (nether realms).
Previous Life Form: Phaladīpikā 14.28 reads the dignity of the 9th lord. A strong 9th lord (exaltation, own sign, or friendly sign) indicates a human past life. A neutral 9th lord points to an animal. A debilitated 9th lord suggests a bird. Phaladīpikā 14.27 adds that a 9th lord in a fixed sign with malefic influence can indicate birth as a plant or tree.
Past Life Country:Phaladīpikā 14.26 maps the 9th lord's planetary identity to a geographical region: Jupiter to Aryavarta (the sacred northern plains), Sun to mountains and forests, Mars to the Vindhya–Magadha region, Saturn to foreign lands, Mercury to pilgrimage areas, and Moon or Venus to lands near sacred rivers.
Past Life Rank: The dignity of the drekkana lord indicates social rank. Exaltation = high rank; middle dignities = medium; debilitation = low station.
