Parāśara answered, 'O Brāhmaṇa, your query has an auspicious purpose in it for the welfare of the Universe. Praying to Lord Brahmā and Śrī Sarasvatī, His power and consort, and the Sun God, the leader of the planets and the cause of Creation, I shall proceed to narrate to you the science of astrology as heard through Lord Brahmā. Only good will follow the teaching of this science to students who are peacefully disposed, who honour their preceptors, who speak only truth and who are God-fearing. Woeful forever doubtlessly will it be to impart knowledge of this science to an unwilling student, to a heterodox and to a crafty person.'

पराशर बोले — हे ब्राह्मण! तुम्हारा यह प्रश्न समस्त जगत् के कल्याण के लिये अत्यन्त मङ्गलमय है । ब्रह्मा, उनकी शक्ति सरस्वती, तथा ग्रहों के नेता एवं सृष्टि के कारणस्वरूप सूर्यदेव को प्रणाम करके, मैं ब्रह्माजी से सुने हुए ज्योतिष शास्त्र को तुम्हें बताऊँगा । इस शास्त्र का उपदेश शान्त, गुरुभक्त, सत्यवादी, ईश्वर-भीरु शिष्यों को ही देना चाहिये । अनिच्छुक, धर्मविरोधी एवं कुटिल व्यक्ति को इसका ज्ञान देना दुःखदायी होता है ।
