From the time of conception of the embryo to the time of delivery of the child from the womb in the 10th month, there are several stages of development. In the first month, the semen will be in a liquid state still and the lord of the month is Venus. During the second month, the embryo hardens and becomes more solid, and the lord of the month is Mars. The lord of the 3rd month during which the limbs sprout up is Jupiter. In the 4th month, the bone is formed and the Sun is the lord. In the 5th, the skin appears, and the lord of the month is the Moon. In the 6th month, the hair begins to grow; the lord of the month is Saturn. In the 7th month, whereof the lord is Mercury, consciousness appears. The lords of the remaining three months, viz., the 8th, the 9th and the 10th — during which the fetus becomes palpable, feels thirst and hunger, draws sustenance from the mother through the umbilical cord, moves about (shakes) and becomes fit for delivery — the lords during these months are respectively the lord of the Adhana Lagna, the Moon and the Sun. The good or evil happening to the child during each month is dependent on the condition of its lord; i.e., if the lord of the month is strong and occupies benefic positions, the child is happy. If the lord of the month is weak, in its depression sign, conquered in planetary fights and troubled, the child suffers and there will be miscarriage, etc.

गर्भाधान से लेकर दसवें माह में प्रसव तक गर्भस्थ शिशु के विकास के कई चरण होते हैं। प्रथम माह में वीर्य तरल अवस्था में रहता है और उस माह का स्वामी शुक्र है। द्वितीय माह में गर्भ कठोर और अधिक ठोस बनता है — उस माह का स्वामी मंगल है। तृतीय माह में अंग-प्रत्यंग अंकुरित होते हैं — उसका स्वामी गुरु है। चतुर्थ माह में अस्थि का निर्माण होता है — उसका स्वामी सूर्य है। पञ्चम माह में त्वचा उत्पन्न होती है — उसका स्वामी चन्द्र है। षष्ठ माह में बाल उगने लगते हैं — उसका स्वामी शनि है। सप्तम माह में — जिसका स्वामी बुध है — चेतना प्रकट होती है। शेष तीन माह — अष्टम, नवम और दशम — के स्वामी क्रमशः अधान लग्नेश, चन्द्र और सूर्य हैं। इन मासों में गर्भ स्पर्शगम्य होता है, तृषा और भूख अनुभव करता है, माँ से नाभिरज्जु के माध्यम से पोषण लेता है, हलचल करता है और प्रसव-योग्य बनता है। प्रत्येक माह में शिशु का सुख-दुःख उस माह के स्वामी की अवस्था पर निर्भर करता है — यदि स्वामी बली और शुभ स्थान में हो तो शिशु सुखी रहेगा; यदि दुर्बल, नीच, ग्रहयुद्ध में पराजित और पीड़ित हो, तो शिशु कष्ट पाएगा और गर्भपात आदि की आशंका रहेगी।
