A natural benefic loses his benevolence if he is in more malefic vargas. Similarly a natural malefic loses his malevolence if he is in more benefic vargas (Sapta-varga). A planet's own sign, his sign of exaltation and benefic vargas are considered auspicious. And malefics, and the vargas of an enemy and debilitated sign, are considered inauspicious.

शुभोऽप्यशुभवर्गेष्वह्यधिकेष्वशुभप्रदः । पापोऽपि शुभवर्गेषु च्यधिकेषु शुभप्रदः । ।15।। यदि शुभ ग्रह भी सप्तवर्गों में अधिक स्थानों पर पापवर्ग में गया हो तो अशुभ ही होगा । पाप ग्रह यदि अधिक शुभ वर्ग में गया हो तो शुभ ही समझा जाएगा ।
