PLANETARY STRENGTHS: Strong in the east are Mercury and Jupiter. The Sun and Mars are so in the south while Saturn is the only planet that derives strength in the west. The Moon and Venus are endowed with vigour when in the north. Again, strong during night are the Moon, Mars and Saturn while Mercury is strong during day and night. The rest (i.e. Jupiter, the Sun and Venus) are strong only in day time. During the dark half malefics are strong. Benefics acquire strength in the bright half of the month. Malefics and benefics are respectively strong in Dakshinayana and Uttarayana. The lords of the year, month, day and Hora (planetary hour) are stronger than the other in ascending order. Again stronger than the other in the ascending are: Saturn, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, the Moon and the Sun.

बुध व गुरु पूर्व-दिशा या लग्न में, सूर्य-मंगल दक्षिण-दिशा या दशम में, शनि पश्चिम-दिशा या सप्तम में, शुक्र व चन्द्रमा उत्तर-दिशा या चतुर्थ में बलवान् होते हैं — यह 'दिग्बल' है। चन्द्रमा, मंगल व शनि रात्रि-बली; बुध सदैव बलवान्; शेष सूर्य, गुरु, शुक्र दिन में बली होते हैं। सभी क्रूर-ग्रह कृष्ण-पक्ष में, शुभ-ग्रह शुक्ल-पक्ष में बली; शुभ-ग्रह उत्तरायण में, क्रूर-ग्रह दक्षिणायन में बली। वर्षेश सारे वर्ष, मासेश सारे मास, वारेश अपने वार, होरेश अपनी होरा में बलवान् — यह 'काल-बल' है। शनि, मंगल, बुध, गुरु, शुक्र, चन्द्रमा, सूर्य — क्रमशः उत्तरोत्तर अधिक नैसर्गिक-बली होते हैं — यह 'नैसर्गिक बल' है।
