The Daśā may be adopted when the Ascendant (Lagna) is in the Horā of the Moon with birth in the Krishna Pakṣa or when the Ascendant is in the Horā of the Sun with birth in the Śukla Pakṣa. Count the number of nakshatras from Puṣya to the Janma Nakshatra. Divide this number by 8. The remainder will indicate the Daśās of the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Ketu, Moon, Mercury and Venus (Rāhu has no Daśā in this system). The Daśās of the above planets are of 6, 15, 8, 17, 10, 19, 12 and 21 years in the aforesaid order, totaling 108 years.

सूर्य, गुरु, केतु, बुध, राहु, मंगल, शनि, चन्द्र — ये आठ (शुक्र रहित) क्रमशः दशेश होते हैं। सात से शुरू कर 2-2 वर्ष बढ़ाकर इनके दशावर्ष होते हैं — 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21 क्रमशः। इनका योग 112 वर्ष होने से 'द्वादशोत्तरी' नाम सार्थक है।
