In the case of the Lagna and other Bhavas, add one Rupa to the strength of the lord of the Bhava concerned. Supplement this by the Directional strength (Digbala) due to that Bhava and also by the strength of aspect (Drigbala) of that Bhava. The aggregate sum-total is the Bhavabala required. Thus ends the 4th Adhyaya on "Determination of the Shadbalas of Planets" in the work Phaladeepika composed by Mantreswara.

लग्न आदि किसी भाव का बल निकालना हो तो — जिस भाव का बल निकालना है उस भावेश को जितना बल (जितने रूप) प्राप्त हों, उसमें भाव दिक्बल तथा भाव पर जो दृक्बल हो वह जोड़ने से भाव बल निकल आता है। भाव यदि अपने स्वामी, बृहस्पति, शुक्र या बुध से युत हो, या अपने स्वामी, बृहस्पति, बुध से दृष्ट हो, तो वह बल भी जोड़ना चाहिये। भाव बल निकालने का प्रयोजन यह है कि भाव बली है तो उस भाव सम्बन्धी शुभ फल होगा। भाव निर्बल है तो उस भाव सम्बन्धी शुभ फल अल्प होगा, अशुभ फल अधिक होगा। (एक टीकाकार ने लिखा है कि भावेश बल में एक रूप और जोड़ दें।)
